The History of Saint Patrick’s Day

Who was St. Patrick?:
St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is one of Christianity’s most widely known figures. Although he is very famous, his life is somewhat of a mystery. It is known that St. Patrick was born in Britain to wealthy parents near the end of the fourth century. He is believed to have died on March 17th. Hence, “Saint Patrick’s Day.” He was taken prisoner by a group of Irish raiders who were attaching his family’s estate. They transported him to Ireland where he spent six years in captivity. Saint Patrick’s day is celebrated on March 17th, his religious feast day and the anniversary of his death. The Irish have celebrated this holiday for thousands of years.

The Legend of the Shamrock:
Long ago, when Ireland was the land of Druids, there was a great Bishop, Patrick by name, who came to teach the word of God throughout the country. Long ago, when Ireland was the land of Druids, there was a great Bishop, Patrick by name, who came to teach the word of God throughout the country. This St. Patrick—for he was indeed a saint—was well loved everywhere he went. One day, however, a group of his followers came to him and admitted that it was difficult for them to believe in the doctrine of the Holy Trinity. St. Patrick reflected a moment and then, stooping down, he plucked a leaf from the shamrock and held it before them, bidding them to behold the living example of the “Three-in-One.” St. Patrick used the shamrock to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The simple beauty of this explanation convinced these skeptics, and from that day the shamrock has been revered throughout Ireland. A four-leaf clover has always been considered a symbol of good luck in Irish culture. According to legend, the leaves of a four-leaf clover represent hope, faith, and love, and God added another leaf for luck.

The Irish flag explained:
The orange on the flag stands for Irish Protestants, green is signifying Irish Catholics and the Republican cause, and the white represents the hope for peace between them.

The Leprechaun:
The original Irish name for these figures of folklore is “lobaircin,” meaning “small-bodied fellow.” Belief in leprechauns probably stems from Celtic belief in fairies, tiny men and women who could use their magical powers to serve good or evil. In Celtic folktales, leprechauns were cranky souls, responsible for mending the shoes of the other fairies. Though only minor figures in Celtic folklore, leprechauns were known for their trickery, which they often used to protect their much-fabled treasure.

Packing tips for Spring Break!

Spring Break for Cal U students is from March 9th – March 17th. For those of you who are traveling we have provided some helpful packing tips for you to help make your packing go a little bit smoother.

Packing tips for Spring Break:

– Develop a packing list to make sure that you don’t forget anything, especially the essentials.
By developing a packing list, it will help you stop over packing and also so you don’t forget anything important! And of course make it less stressful.
– When packing outfits, choose outfits based on activities that you will be doing.
If you know what you are going to be doing on your trip, pack for exactly for that! This type of packing strategy will help eliminate over packing. For example, if you know you will be going out to dinner pack an outfit for that!
– Wrap your jewelry around Q-tips to prevent it from tangling.
There is nothing worse than unpacking tangled jewelry. To help prevent tangled jewelry, wrapping it around a Q-tip is what you need to do!
– Keep an “emergency” bag in your suitcase.
You never know when life is going to happen so use this emergency bag to pack some medicine and band aids just in case! Basically a mini drug store in your suitcase. You could also pack some silverware or even some cleaning wipes for those “just in case” moments.
– Instead of folding your clothes, roll them!
Rolling your clothes is a great way to open up a ton of space in your suitcase.
– Cling wrap any toiletries that could spill and destroy your clothing.
It is better safe than sorry. By putting cling wrap around anything that could possibly leak it will avoid your clothing from getting damaged or ruined. Additional, you can put the toiletries in a plastic bag.
– Pack a “snack pack” for the airplane
Airport food is extremely expensive so bringing TSA friendly snacks will help you save a couple dollars when traveling.
– Electronic essentials:
Portable cellphone charger, headphones, phone charger, laptop, tablet

Halloween Safety

Halloween Safety

Halloween weekend is upon us! The holiday filled with fun and creativity, tricks and treats, parties and parades, whats not to love about Halloween? With all things joyful in life, there are dangers and worries. Halloween safety is so very important for adults and children alike. Here are a few simple and easy ways to keep your family and friends safe on Halloween night.

  • Put down your electronics! It is impossible to pay attention to your surroundings, whether you are driving a car, crossing a street or simply trying to trick or treat….you need to be aware of your surroundings.
  • If trick or treating after dark, where some sort of reflector on your costume or carry a flashlight, keeping it on at all times so you are visible to traffic.
  • Avoid masks and costumes that cause tripping hazards
  • Older children not accompanied by an adult should always travel in groups, on well lit streets and avoid unfamiliar areas
  • Do not eat any candy until you have gotten home and see that it is visibly safe to eat
  • Motorists need to drive slow and proceed with caution through all intersections
  • Discourage young drivers from being behind the wheel on Halloween
  • Do not drink and drive!

Halloween is a lot fun but only if everyone is kept safe. Please keep in mind the safety of yourself, your family and friends and those around you at all times. If you ever see something or someone out of the ordinary, don’t cause a scene, immediately call 911 and seek safety. Lastly, have fun!!!

Decorating Your Apartment

Decorating your apartment, ways to spruce up those walls!

One of the biggest downfalls to apartment living is the limitations when trying to “make it your own”. Don’t let that deter you though, there are ways to spruce up those white walls and plain Jane windows!

Wall art is the obvious quick fix solution for bare walls, but there are so many more options for renters. Some landlords will allow you to paint with the understanding that upon moving out, you will repaint the unit back to its original color, which is typically all white. If you don’t want to be bothered with painting prior to leaving, have no fear, there are several other options for you! Contact paper, sounds funny but can really be eye catching and beautiful. This is what is used for lining cabinets and drawers, but it is self stick and easy to remove, who says you cannot use it on walls? There are some great examples of beautiful prints at Contact Paper Designs that can be custom ordered and measured to fit any space.

If you are unable to choose a design of contact paper that you like, you might find fabric to be a better option? There are hundreds and hundreds of options for fabric choices and who says they are only meant to be pillows, blankets, and clothing? Fabric on walls not only adds color, but texture. It can applied with adhesive on the edges leaving minimal damage to repair before you move out, or it can even be stapled! I love the look of this, its a small space, just an accent wall in a little nook but when you’re living in a small space, this can make a huge difference!

Wallpaper is still always a great option when decorating your apartment, but not the messy stuff that requires water then it gets really sticky, it is hard to apply to the walls, it gets wrinkles and is just a total mess. There are temporary options for wallpaper. Peel and stick wallpaper is all the new craze! Peel and stick can be used for not only walls, but also dressers, inside drawers, and on lampshades! Can you even believe this is a low cost, peel and stick wallpaper?

Don’t let living in a rental keep you from spicing up your space! Decorating an apartment doesn’t have to be a chore! Stay tuned for storage tips for small space living in our next blog!

School Essentials When Headed to College

Headed back to school? Freshman in college, afraid you won’t have everything you need? Have no fear, this list of college must haves will help you out!

A place to call home for 9 months! Seems obvious, I know, but don’t wait until the last minute or you might be scrambling!

Supplies, another obvious one, but do you know what you REALLY need?

1. Text Books. Buy them, even if everyone says you don’t need them. No two students study the same!

2.Writing Utensils. College students still use pencils, contrary to what you might have heard, and don’t forget lead and extra erasers. Pens and highlighters, also essentials. Be sure to stick with

blue or black ink, as most professors will have that preference.

3. Three Ring Binders. These are a must have for organization. Put notebook paper in each one and be sure to have back up for refills.

4. Index Cards. The number one essential for studying.

5. Planner or Personal Organizer. Once school starts, you’ll have classes to worry about, sporting events, campus events, social club happenings! You’ll love having a planner, they are a life saver.

6. Graphing Calculator. Spend the extra money and buy yourself a nice graphing calculator. You will not regret it. As long as it doesn’t get lost, you can use it for four years of school.

7. Laptop Computer. Aside from text books, a laptop is probably going to be your most costly investment. However, you won’t regret having it. It is always nice to be able to type papers and do

research from home. Don’t forget the printer, extra cartridge and paper!

Dorm Room Essentials. This is probably ever college student’s favorite thing about school, living away from home. Most have never done it until they move away for school, so do you know what you really need?

1. Bed Risers. I put these first because they are a storage must have! Most dorm rooms are small, any extra useable space is always beneficial. Bed risers allow you to utilize the wasted floor space             underneath your bed.  Bed Risers

2. Bed Sheets. Most dorm room beds are a twin EXTRA LONG. Be sure to purchase twin extra long sheets as well as mattress pad cover and blankets or comforter. Twin XL Bedding Essentials

3. Pillows. It’s always nice to have an extra pillow, so be sure to buy at least 2.

4. Towels. Most dorms have communal bathrooms and your towels aren’t included, buy a few sets so you’re not constantly worrying about washing them.

6. Shower Caddy. Again, with communal bathrooms, your toiletries cannot stay in there. An easy way to keep your things together and transport to and from the bathroom, is with a plastic caddy.

7. Shower Shoes. Sounds silly, I know. You will get used to wearing non slip flip flops in the shower, just think how many others are using the same shower, then you wont mind it so much!

8. Dorm Room Storage. Whether it be plastic storage bins or additional drawers and shelves, you’re probably going to need more than what is provided.

9. Cooling Fan. Unfortunately most dorms will not have central air. A fan for your comfort in will be nice to have when it’s warm.

10. Extension Cord. Extra power sources are always nice to have, you will have lots of stuff that need power and so will your roommate.

This should give you a jump start on your college shopping and make for an easy transition into life away from home. If you’re a future California University of PA student and a “last minute” kind of person and you haven’t found a place to call home yet, consider Best University Properties! Best University Properties
